About Diabetes
Diabetes Mellitus is a syndrome which causes an inappropriately high level of sugar in blood, and is caused by either low levels of the insulin hormone (Type 1), or from a developed body resistance to the same hormone (Type 2).
There are three types of diabetes:
- Type 1: This Diabetes is caused by a response of the body inmunitary system against the pancreas beta cells (which are the responsible for insulin generation). It represents an approximate 10% of all Diabetes occurrences, and it's the type that can affect people with normal weight and children.
- Type 2: This type is caused by a developed resistance to the insulin effects from the body, which is usually related to obesity, although it typically affected adults older than 45 years. This type is rapidly increasing in the developed world.
- Gestational Diabetes: It is similar to Type 2 in several ways, although it happens while pregnancy. It affects a range of 2%-5% of all pregnancies, although is fully treatable.
